Home Security History
Taking a look back in time, the need to protect one’s home has been around for centuries. It is instinctual to protect your home and your loved ones. Home security has evolved over time with new technology and innovations. We have come a long way from medieval times when home security consisted of guards, moats, and flaming bow and arrows. What was once a luxury and an expensive notion for kings and wealthy home owners, home security has become affordable and obtainable for everyone. We can all be kings of our own castles.
During the 1980s, companies began to introduce the home alarm system. The alarm system consists of door sensors and loud, alarming sirens to ward off unwanted houseguests. The home alarm system could only be purchased through a provider and worked as a two-way system. The alarm company would notify the police if the alarm wasn’t turned off, and the service had to be purchased as an ongoing monthly service. As time went on and technology progressed, home security became more of a hands-on approach.
More recently, as in the 2000s, homeowners could now purchase and install their own video surveillance video security. Home security cameras became more readily available for homeowners and not just business owners. After purchasing a security camera, the homeowner could then view the images on a television, computer, or other type of receiver. The need for a monthly service or “watchdog” wasn’t needed.
Video surveillance has been around since the 1950s, but was only used by police to view areas with high crime rates. During the 1960s and 1970s, businesses started to install their own security devices. This type of security became quite popular during the 1970s after videocassettes were created because the security cameras could now record images. The general population, not just police and big business owners, could start to see the advantages of video surveillance because it provided undeniable evidence in the event of a robbery, home invasion, or accident. Video surveillance started to appear in more public places such as ATMs, sporting events, restaurants, parking lots, and other similar locations.
Since the 1990s, security cameras have improved with smaller sizes, clearer images, and easier ways to record. Home security cameras can now be purchased with night view, infrared, and even wireless security cameras are available. Home security cameras have become popular for working parents to purchase because the security cameras can be hidden though out the house to watch nannies taking care of their children. Nanny cams are installed in teddy bears and other hidden places throughout the home. With the use of wireless security cameras, the children’s parents could view the recorded images from a cell phone or office computer.
